 | Global warming and Government PolicyThe current Federal Government has been proactive on water policy and it seems that there is now conviction that Water is a national issue and the Federal Government must take the initiative. The proposals to take over control of the Murray Darling system is most welcome but why stop there? Global WarmingWorking through the spin on global warming is a total contrast. It seem that it is now recognised that global warming is going to be a hot topic at the next election and so there is a need to be seen to be mouthing the right words, unfortunately there seems little conviction in their statements. Global warming and Climate change require a double barrelled approach. In the longer term we must cut down our emissions and this has to be part of a global strategy of which Australia must be an active participant. However there is nothing that can be done in the short term to avoid the effects of global warming, it will take decades to reverse the effects that have already been triggered even if the world were to cut its emissions today. What is urgently needed is a strategy which will enable us to manage with the inevitable changes of global warming which are already locked in. Australia is largely an arid county yet we have failed to adopt arid climate technologies to manage our water but instead have imported the technologies from wetter climates, as the continent become yet more arid we need to adopt these arid climate technologies before time runs out. |
